When it comes to children with special needs, vocational skills are crucial, and it's never too early to start thinking about their future. At ages 5 and 6, our kids have already developed interests and hobbies that can become really useful later in life. Some love to work with animals, while others enjoy cleaning up, sorting items or working with their hands. The future dental assistant in the picture, for example, is having fun getting to the root of his patient's problem. The children depend on their teachers to recognize these interests as potential work skills. Although they have each been labeled with a disability, this should not keep them from building the skills and knowledge to be independent professionals in the future. By using their imagination and acting the part of their favorite community worker, they can begin to dream big!
