My students will be able to borrow books to read during silent sustained reading in class, and at home for homework. They will be able to explore titles that are an appropriate reading level for them, and that are interesting to them. I have selected titles that students have frequently requested or tried to find in our school library, only to discover that we didn't have them, or the copies we had were already checked out. I work at a Title I middle school. Many of my students' families cannot purchase new books for them, and many of my students have not been taught how to navigate the town's public library.
My students are deciding who they will be including whether they are people who read. Having a classroom library that appeals to them will help them build their identities as readers. Having strong literacy skills will help my students be academically successful in all of their classes. I want my students to enter high school with the best possible foundation to be successful in school and the rest of their lives!
