Collectively and individually, my students are amazing people. I teach 150 sixth graders who come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Within my district, my school is known to be one of the most diverse. Students come from all ethnicities and a myriad of countries such as Vietnam, Mexico, Yemen, Pakistan, Liberia, the Philippines, Laos, Columbia and more. Though my students are gifted and intelligent they live in a poor community and attend an underfunded public school. Our school must meet the needs of over 700 students with a student-to-adult ratio of 25-to-1. Classroom sizes are capped at 35. Students often get lost in the crowd which can be debilitating and harmful to their educations. Frequently, due to home circumstances, they lack access to some of the most basic supplies like paper and writing utensils.
