My students have all struggled with reading and are now getting specialized support from me to increase their ability to decode and comprehend texts. However, many of my students do not have access to texts that are high in engagement and low in readability which means that they are not practicing the skills they are learning. Series books are the best way to get students hooked on reading. I have found that when I introduce the first book in a series to my students, they are eager to continue on reading the series on their own! This has happened when we read Mercy Watson books and Dog Man books. I am excited to also see a variety of racially diverse characters in the series that I found such as Katie Woo and Freddy Ramos in Zapato Power books. What a great way to increase their reading skills!
