My students are ages 12-14, in the seventh and eighth grades, and attend a Math and Science Exam school in an urban city. Our school is intended to foster science, technology, engineering and math skills necessary for today's modern society however, our public school funding does not include the visual arts. Many of my students come from a low socioeconomic backgrounds and all receive free lunch. The majority of my students are Black, Latino, and Asian, and many speak English as a second language. Our graduation rate is one of the highest in the district and many of our graduates attend 4-year colleges after graduation, some even attending Ivy League schools on full scholarships. There is no art teacher nor design teacher, which means that the system designed to create more STEM graduates for our future is failing to inspire them with the creative outlet and artistic training necessary for beautiful design and intuitive technology.
