My students currently share four calculators in our classroom. We use math often in class to help us understand science and to reinforce mathematical literacy. Using mathematical modeling and computational thinking is an NGSS Science and Engineering Practice, which means throughout their science classes, students are expected to use mathematics to represent relationships and make predictions. Calculators help us by automating calculations and analyzing larger amounts of data than students can efficiently determine by hand in the time frame of a class period. Mathematics is key to understanding science, and calculators are a vital tool for helping students of all ability levels to feel comfortable and experience success with the math they encounter in my classroom.
