As I have learned about trauma-informed education and other modalities to try to reach these students who were being under-served, I have begun to realize that ALL students need instruction in social and emotional learning to have the optimal classroom experience. While we think of SEL as something that happens in the lower grades, high school is such a vital time of learning in that area. Even before the pandemic, I saw so many students' academic experiences be impacted by their social and emotional issues. So many students have had Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma, mental or developmental health issues, or just other challenges to learning that aren't addressed by content alone. I want to reach those students and make learning a safe experience for them. By addressing the SEL needs of students, they are better able to learn academically, as well as just being happier citizens of the school. Since I have found SEL instruction so powerful, I also want to help other teachers access the realizations and learning I have been so fortunate to have that has made such a difference in my classroom.
