My students dream of having access to a wide selection of books that represent their interests, reflect the diversity of our community, and model values such as empathy, acceptance, and inclusion. Unfortunately, many of my students have always had the opportunity to see their diverse cultural identities represented in the books available to them. With these books, my students would have the opportunity to read stories written by African American, Latino, and Asian authors and stories that prominently feature the lively and rich histories of diverse cultures in New York City. Building a culturally responsive classroom library has the power to acknowledge and appreciate students' cultures; model important values of empathy, acceptance, and inclusion; and empower students to read, learn, and grow. I can only dream of my students having access to these diverse stories as they learn and grow as global citizens!
