After teaching 4th grade for the past couple of years, I am now faced with the challenge and privilege of teaching 1st grade. In September, my class will consist of 13 creative students that are eager to enter first grade. These inner city school kids not only have to overcome obstacles in their everyday life, but they also struggle to keep up with the curriculum. Faced with challenges beyond their control and severe learning disabilities, they work harder than most students. While a majority of students in special education have already developed a defeated attitude, I have a chance this year to to prove to my class they are capable of conquering the world if they only put their mind to it. My goal for the 2015/2016 school year is to not only ensure my students understand the value of acquiring a good education but most importantly understand that learning is fun.
