I'm the librarian at a fantastic middle school that serves a diverse population of students in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. My students love graphic novels, and they are checked out so frequently, and by so many students, that many are falling apart. We need more items to offer students, and we need more durable copies of some of their favorite titles. Graphic novels are text-rich, engaging, exciting, and complex. They are also a great way to attract reluctant readers. Providing books in a variety of formats opens a door to more readers. Graphic novels also help promote language and literacy skills, and they're excellent for English Language Learners because the text paired with illustrations gives them context clues. We have a large population of native Spanish-speaking students, and we are also a dual language campus. Growing our collection of Spanish books is really important for our school.
