My students need Tri-Write pencils due to their sturdiness and to increase accuracy of my students' grips. These pencils do not require any additional special grips to help kindergarteners to begin to naturally write using a tripod grip. With your help, students can skillfully develop the tripod grips necessary for allowing their hands to make the small, quick movements required for writing.
Handwriting Without Tears is a supplemental curriculum that takes the stress out of learning to write by using developmentally appropriate strategies. Students begin learning how to write by learning how to make "Mat Man" since they should typically already know how to draw a person. "Mat Man" is just a more detailed version of what they can already draw. The skills that come from drawing "Mat Man" are easily transferable to learning how to write because all letters are made of the same shapes that make up "Mat Man" (i.e. Big Line, Little Line, Big Curve, Little Curve, and Dot). I would combine this writing curriculum with my reading curriculum by introducing the letters and their sounds, then teaching my students how to create the letters using the building blocks of "Mat Man."
As with all students this year, my students are starting out with a disadvantage due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While some of them may have originally come from Head Start, Great Start Readiness Programs, or another type of preschool, those options have been shut down in Michigan since the middle of March. This means that my students have had little to no ability these past 6 months to develop the skills that are necessary to be "Kindergarten Ready." I want to be ready to help them quickly and effortlessly develop these skills needed for kindergarten.
