I work in a wonderful District 75 high school for students with disabilities that gives students the instruction, tools, and strategies to help them get jobs and live in the world after leaving the program at age 21. The students are taught functional academic and vocational skills to make them better partners in the community. The students I work with are amazing young men and women who are diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities in a 12:1:1 population. They range in abilities academically and socially, but never cease to put a smile on my face or keep me on my toes. They learn using visual and hands-on activities. Unfortunately they have behaviors that impede their learning process and that of their peers. Most of the behaviors stem from a lack of communication or understanding of the tasks. My students rely on materials that can aid them in learning new information and becoming successful students.
