Access to high interest and culturally relevant literature is crucial to fostering a love of reading in young readers. More importantly, literature can be used to fuel important discussions about issues facing young readers. Using the national nonprofit, Project Lit, as a support model, the students will need access to the latest (and seriously greatest!) teen literature. This project will fund a set of The Stars Beneath our Feet novels for an after-school extended learning program. Students will read novels as part of the after-school program and will meet bi-monthly in book clubs to discuss and engage with the text and their peers. The goal for students participating in the reading group is ultimately gains in their reading skills and testing data, but introducing students to engaging literature with the hopes of biting them with the reading bug is certainly not be overlooked!
