Our elementary school holds special activities during Read Across America week to help promote the love of reading. We face significant challenges as the majority of students are 1 to 2 grades behind in their reading levels, which is linked to high poverty and lack of books and resources at home. Our inner city elementary school is 100% free breakfast and lunch. We have a very diverse student population with a lot of heart. Demographically, we are 80% African American, 5% Caucasian, and 15% Hispanic and other. The community where the school is located is afflicted by high poverty and violence. If you are looking for a place to donate to where your dollars will go to those most in need and most likely to benefit, look no further. It is imperative to get our students, which have large gains to make in their reading levels back on track, to become proficient readers and ensure their continuing success.
