Among the many social, emotional, and familial issues that my students face, most of it is out of their control. Very often, their learning and physical well being is threatened by smells that permeate a typical high school classroom. Their ability to cope is often out of their control, but very often smells- including a person who uses perfume that is too strong- can cause behavioral outbursts in students with sensory issues, breathing issues in those with compromised immune or respiratory systems, and other physical symptoms. In the past week, I have had students who suffered migraines, outbursts, and asthma attacks that have been brought on by a new student's cologne. I work to make my classroom a safe space for my students- but that needs to include the air they breathe. Our newly remodeled classrooms now have windows that do not open- so we can no longer "air out" smells or bring in fresh air to breathe. Please help make some of our Special Education classrooms a safer place to breathe.
