My students are African American and are served in a public school that boasts more than 98% qualification for free and reduced priced meals. The students warm the heart with a smile just as any other group of elementary age children do. Look closely and you will see a fire in their eyes. A fire that needs to be fed; fed with knowledge, optimism, and power. Too many of them are reading below their current grade level and would rather sit idle than read. They are vibrant and enthusiastic, however, they desperately need a ray of hope that will project them from the boarded up homes, police raids, midday shootings, and dismal prophesies of their environment. The school is that source of hope. For we, the teachers, believe that we can offer the needed propulsion in the form of high educative standards, a no excuses mentality, and a joy and love for the students and the profession.
