My students come to school every day ready to learn despite having to battle cognitive, adaptive, and social delays. They yearn to read, write, and participate within daily school life. One of their biggest hurdles to overcome is developing functional literacy skills. This includes phonological awareness, phonics knowledge, reading fluency, and reading comprehension skills. I currently teach Autistic Support 3rd-5th grade in an urban school setting. Like many urban school districts across the country, we struggle financially, and as a result vital resources and materials are hard to secure.
