My students have shown tremendous growth using guided reading groups and leveled readers. Research shows that young readers should be reading texts at their level, which means they should be able to read 97-100% of the text's words. In Kindergarten and 1st grade, students need access to a wide range of engaging books at their level in order to practice their reading skills. Having access to guided reading books will help my ESL students grow in their reading at their own pace. We need enough books for our growing student population. ESL students need access to guided reading books, too. With these books, students will practice their reading skills in a small group setting. Once they have mastered a book at their instructional level, they will be able to practice reading that book on their own during their independent reading time. Having a 6 book set of guided reading books will help me teach a group of students at the same reading level. Having high-quality books on a variety of topics will help my students grow in developing their academic language in a wide variety of topics.
