My school is in a suburb of Denver. Most of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and weekend food from the district. Our school is suffering from the same budget cuts many schools in our country are facing, and money for necessities for our classroom is limited. The teachers in my district spend money out of their own pockets to ensure they have everything necessary to teach their students. Many of my students live in small apartments and come from homes where there parents work odd hours or multiple jobs. They look to school as their safe place. My goal is to create a classroom environment that is welcoming and encourages kids to learn and grow. Unfortunately this is more of a struggle that I anticipated. Our building is outdated and run down. Our furniture is much the same. During group time my class sits on the old, dingy, carpet. They are uncomfortable and constantly arguing about where to sit.
