My classroom was an Army barracks, turned shop class, turned art class, turned computer science/writing class. I am not allowed to photograph my 7th - 12th grade students, as they are "placed" here, and not because they moved into the school zone. Any technology that is not social media or a smartphone is new to nearly all of them. Some have shown interest and proficiency in computer systems, or coding, or outside-the-box problem solving. I also teach writing (grammar and essays) to students aiming for their high school equivalency certificates. My goals are to show that "geniuses" are not the only ones who can do amazing things with computers, and that education and learning is how to have a life better than what they've known--and both are 100% within their reach.
