We are just about to embark on learning all about oceans, which is very exciting to my students. We are not close to the ocean so it is often difficult to create as real of an experience as I'd like. Often times we have live animals as part of our learning experience such as frogs, tadpoles, crawdads, and salmon when we study ponds and rivers. Our class participates in a county salmon in the classroom project in which the local fishing club sponsors us to hatch and raise salmon. When we get to our ocean unit it obviously is very difficult to bring a live hands-on experience to the children. I would like to get the appropriate materials so we can raise live jellyfish. I feel it is so important for children to learn and engage in the responsibility of a live animal. An experience such as this will carry on throughout their entire lives and hopefully make them better stewards of the Earth. Our Ocean Expo event is a way to help the children become confident. At the end of our project we invite parents, the board members, and other important community adults to come for our Expo Event where the adults learn from the children. Adults are given a page of questions about what we've learned so they can best interact with a child. The children take the adult around the room and teach them about everything they have learned. We have many hands on experiments for all to try. The children are amazing! You can't believe how well they do discussing and teaching our visitors. I can't wait to see the excitement and learning a jellyfish tank will cause in my room!
