As libraries, we need to be on the cutting edge of teaching emerging and divergent literacy to our students. In our library, we plan to switch between channels when national news is occurring to compare coverage; we will change stations each day, giving a nod to all Local, National, and International News Channels. When students comment on running headlines, we will help them double-check accuracy. If we ignore the 24-hour news cycle presence in our students’ lives, we are doing them a disservice by undervaluing the important role, journalism and the media plays. Many students are not aware of international situations. While the whole country turned its eyes to the deadly Western Wildfires in California, Oregon, and Washington resulting in numerous deaths during the Fall Firestorm of 2020 with thousands of people losing their homes, livelihoods and even their lives, our students were unaware. We want our kids to act locally and serve their communities, but they also need to think globally and recognize the impact international situations have on our more immediate world. When students see global news stories playing, they are exposed to their greater world, building empathy and geographical knowledge. Having a large TV viewable throughout the Library, students will be able to view up-to-date School, Local, National, and International News, Educational Programs, Virtual Field Trips, Virtual Author Visits, and even Virtually meet with their teachers too! This exposure will keep them current on what is happening in our area and around the world. It will also allow them the opportunity to learn about other places and people. See is believing and I believe my students will be intrigued to explore the world outside of our small community if they see what is infinitely possible!
