Many packaged curriculum stories are not reflective of student identities, so it is important for students to have access to books that act as mirrors and reflect who they are. It is also important for them to have access to texts about a range of identities and cultures to learn from. In my classroom, students have the ability to check books out of our classroom library to take home and read on their own time. The excitement in my students eyes when I told them they could take the books home to read was overwhelming! Being a first-year teacher, I only had so many middle grade books in my possession. We currently have a decent amount, which my students have been checking out, but we'd LOVE to fill out our library even more!
