Using quality literature is a well-known, effective way to open focused conversations with both children and adults alike. Recent events in our country have drawn attention to the tragedies of systemic racism, and finally, finally catalyzed the need for significant and lasting change. For our children, this is the time to educate and give guidance on diversity, inclusion, equity, dignity, and the beauty of connecting as human beings to celebrate and lift each other up. We need to first recognize and acknowledge both historical and current events in terms of racial inequities and consequences, and the titles I selected will spark discussions as well as provide opportunities for celebrating contributions and achievements of black and brown people in our nation. We have to move away from seeing differences as deficits. Diversity provides strengths that, when drawn together for the collective good, make us a more resilient and complete society. The books I selected will provide the platform for having meaningful, safe conversations that will open the eyes, hearts and minds of students, contextualized with love, dignity, and respect. I will certainly continue to grow in my own journey as well, and will model vulnerability, questions, and insecurities with my students. I have no doubt that you realize that when you support this project, you support a more just society, a more just future.
