"Ms.James, Can I please sit on the rug?" I've heard this question so many times over the years. Whether it's reading, writing, or math, students need to be comfortable in their work space in order to focus and increase engagement. Students will have a chance to sit with a partner on a couch in our library, and share a story together. Those students that have a hard time with self regulation during lessons can sit on a wobbly stool as a way to engage their body while mentally focusing on a task. Last year I had ONE bouncy ball in my classroom that the students were able to share. Many expressed how they wished we had more and how being able to choose how and where they sit made the classroom more fun. I know that these materials will amaze my students and only push them to have more pride and ownership of their classroom.
