First, as a Balanced Literacy school, we do not use textbooks; we have autonomy in the strategies, activities, and materials or texts that are used to teach content. While wildly beneficial in numerous ways, this flexibility often proves to be environmentally unfriendly in that teachers often make numerous printed copies of texts for students. A document camera can help minimize this paper waste. Further, writing is a challenge for many of my students, particularly those who are English Learners and reluctant writers. Writing instruction has also proven to be a challenge for me without a working document camera on which to model writing strategies and techniques for the whole class or groups of students. Additionally, the document camera will also support reading instruction, by enabling me to project an authentic text to use as a think aloud and model metacognition, or even to explicitly model how to effectively highlight and annotate a text. The document camera will become a regularly used technology device that will monumentally improve reading and writing instruction and subsequently enhance my students' overall literacy skills, all while being more environmentally conscious!
