Our scholars often struggle to access rigorous, grade-level content because they struggle with arithmetic. Many of our scholars even have special accommodations to have calculators on standardized assessments, yet cannot consistently access them during regular instruction. While we still spend time re-emphasizing these arithmetic skills, our scholars also need to be able to access challenging, grade-level work. With a class set of calculators, we can more easily do interesting projects without arithmetic skills being a barrier. Additionally, our scholars often do not get a chance to practice with calculators despite being expected to know how to use them on standardized assessments. By being able to practice with these tools prior to the state standardized assessments, our scholars should have a better opportunity to perform well. This opens up many doors for our students since 8th grade test scores often determine admission to selective high schools.
