My students read books every day in my classroom. They also love reading in book clubs, just like many adults do. Book clubs in my classroom mean that a group of students read the same book, create discussion questions to talk about their book, and end class with a group discussion. This project will help my students develop their sense of empathy as they learn about the holocaust. The holocaust is an area of high interest for 7th grade students. Discovering the challenges people faced during this time period helps adolescents learn to be understanding of the people they encounter today, especially those who might not be similar to them. Through participating in nonfiction book clubs, students can realize how much they can learn through reading while learning about an important, and tragic, part of human history.
