Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit homebody, joins a party of dwarfs and their wizard companion in a series of adventures to reclaim the dwarfs’ homeland from the great dragon Smaug. Through his travels, Bilbo learns the value of friendship and chosen family. My goal is to have a class set of these novels to allow each student to be able to have their own copy to use both in class and at home. My students will read The Hobbit as the core text of a unit exploring the Hero's Journey (or Monomyth). By incorporating popular media like Marvel's Thor, ancient Norse myths, various informational texts, and poems, I am hoping to spark a love of adventure and reading in my eighth graders.
