Our first unit of study is memoirs and figurative language. I chose this book as many of my students migrated to Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina. I want to draw on their experiences to make connections to the text. My school is only able to provide five books, and I have 30 students per class. I would like for students to be able to follow along as I read and to be able to read independently to complete projects on their own time. I hope that students gain an insight as to what a memoir is as well as understand how figurative language is used to paint mental pictures.
