My school is a Title One school, which means we receive a grant for a special reading teacher due to high poverty. 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and all receive free breakfast. In my 2nd grade class of 20 children, 8 receive special services due to their reading abilities. We do not have enough funding to replace the broken headphones, or provide comfy places for kids to sit with a good book. I believe that providing comfy bean bag chairs and being able to use my listening center will encourage a love for reading in my students. They are such precious kiddos, but many of them do not have opportunities to enjoy a good book other than at school due to familial challenges of schedules and/or finances. It would be such a huge gift to provide my students a cozy reading area to further encourage their reading skills. I hope you will help my 2nd graders in this goal. Our school is such a lovely place to learn and this would make it the absolute best for our room.
