I teach English and Spoken Word at Youth Opportunities High School, located in a historic area of Watts. The school is part of the LA Education Corps and serves an important role for students who deserve a second chance at school. While we are not a continuation school (our students graduate with diplomas) most of our students are here because they struggled at traditional public schools and charters. Some of my students are young parents, while others are trying to reinvent themselves as a person who is more than just the gang member, criminal, or drop-out society sees. A fair amount of them did not receive the proper support for their learning disabilities or other special needs and are now thriving in our caring small school environment. Donating to my classes ensures that these students can secure the resources they need to be successful, while sending them a message that their dreams and ambitions matter.
