I am going into my thrid year teaching and have been moved from 2nd to 4th grade. When I went into my new classroom I noticed that the teacher prior to me took all the library books. I decided to take advantage of this blank slate by making sure my library was as diverse as my student population is. I have many ethnically and culturally diverse students that crave to read books they can relate to. I also have students with special needs and learning disabilities that want to find books that they will love as well.
Looking at my classroom population and school population I have formed a classroom library that every student can not only relate to, but feel accepted for what makes them unique. These books hit many different populations such as: immigrants, poverty, mixed, disabilities, Asian Americans, Middle Eastern/South Asia, Hispanics and African Americans. In addition, I have added books on how they can make a difference in the world such as: environmental impact, endangered animals and biographies from historical heroes.
These books will surely spark the joy of reading in every child and keep my students questioning what more they can do to make the world they live in a better place. Thank you for your interesting in supporting my students. We are grateful for you.
