These students may be overtired from staying up late doing homework, watching TV, playing video games, or texting into the wee hours of the night. While I have little control over what they do after 3:05 p.m., I do and must find better ways to keep them on their toes (or at least their feet) during English class. Likewise, those (most often male) students who tip back in their seats are just millimeters away from the dreaded concussions that are so prevalent in middle schools today. Who said reading and writing weren't contact sports? My students are these teenagers, tired and fidgety at the same time, with too much or too little energy to maintain a focus throughout Act II of Romeo and Juliet.
