Learning how to build mental concentration for any kind of stamina is already quite the undertaking for a third grader. In our classroom, I allow students the option to choose a position to help them focus. Sometimes, however, students want to feel grounded (or be on the floor) and have support for their back. They can use the flex seats to accomplish this goal. Students who are engaging in a small group discussion may desire to move a bit while interacting but also maintain a closely formed circle. There they can choose to use wobble chairs or the balance ball seats. These materials will improve my students’ schools lives by teaching them 1) the structure of school does not have to feel rigid and confined, 2) they can have choices to make decisions that help them learn better, and 3) there are different ways to mitigate physical restlessness to focus energy on critical thinking. And all of that is okay because they are learning what’s best for them as lifelong scholars. The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues when it comes to slower activities such as writing, desk work, or group collaboration. This project will aid my students who struggle to embrace the traditional classroom setting, feel like they do not have a voice/choice, or do not know an alternate way to fully express themselves while being productive. With fewer behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
