Life is about making choices--and often, those choices are not easy. How does a person choose between two good choices, when both seem equally helpful to everyone involved? What happens when a choice is made with the best intentions and it actually hurts someone? Life is about making hard choices. My students are fundamentally good tweens reared in homes where choosing the right is the right--and only--thing to do. Sometimes the simplicity of this theory results spills over into judging the person making the choice as good or bad. People can not, and must not, be judged by how others "see" them. Reading and analyzing books that show all sides of a character encourages understanding of real-life people. Reading increases empathy and understanding of others--regardless of what their choices have been.
