Students at our elementary love coming to the school library. They love checking out books and talking about them with their friends. I strive to give my students the best literature available but budgets are tight and don't stretch far.
For many students, the school library is the only place where they have access to books. The average age of our library collection is 2003. There has been a recent and long-overdue bloom in quality children's books featuring children of color and their stories. My students need access to these books. Many of them read below grade level and research shows that self-selected reading for pleasure has a positive educational impact, as well as improving decision-making and increasing empathy.
This project will provide my students with more opportunities to read about lives and neighborhoods that look and feel like their own. It will encourage and support a lifelong love of reading and inspire students to become amazing readers!
