The bulk of this fundraiser focuses on The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. We hope to have a classroom set of these to read as a class as a narrative supplement to our housing inequality studies. A select group of our students read this book during lunchtime book clubs last semester, and they loved it. These students will have the opportunity to be leaders!
These books will give students the opportunity to develop critical consciousness in the context of novels with relatable characters. Not only are we hoping to acquire The Hate U Give, but also other books to add to our school's collection and bolster the selection of diverse books at multiple reading levels.
As a Special Education teacher, I know how difficult it is to find relevant and meaningful books for students of color that balance teenage passion with elementary reading levels. Too often, students of color who have intellectual disabilities are left with books that seem juvenile to them or feature only white characters. Other books included in this project will support those students as they also grow as critical thinkers alongside relatable characters.
