Having a hydroponic system in our classroom will help students learn all about plants, how to grow their own food, and about better nutrition. We will investigate similarities and differences between growing plants in a hydroponic system versus soil through experiments, observations and discussions. Students will gain an understanding of plant parts and functions, what plants need to survive, as well as the plant life cycle through hands-on exploration. These lessons will start with the basics in kindergarten and build in complexity for each grade level. This will lead us into nutritional lessons. Students will be able to eat what we grow and become excited to eat more fruits and vegetables. We will discuss why fruits and vegetables are an important part of our diet and how to take what we harvest and turn it into a meal. For students still learning at home, we will be able to do this through online meetings, videos and discussions however, I can't wait to get them all safely back into the classroom.
