The middle school I work at used to be an elementary school not too long ago. Because of this, our library is very out dated and many of the books are way below the students reading and interest level. The school is working hard to update, but the process is a long one. Many of my students would rather choose books from my personal library that go check out books in the school library. I want to foster a love for reading in my students. I want to have high interest, grade level books for them at their fingertips. I want them to get lost in a book and have books that they can see themselves in and relate to. Our titles include The Phantom Tollbooth, The Outsiders, Wonder, Walk Two Moons and many more. So much new YA and children's literature is becoming so diverse and relatable for students of color. I want them to feel connected to what they read like I was able to in middle school.
