Located on the outskirts of Portland, the students at my school face real-life struggles on a daily basis. There are a number of students living in transition, without knowing where they will be living the next day, or where their next meal will come from. Marysville is extremely diverse, with over 13 languages and nationalities. Our school celebrates mindfulness, diversity and community. Mindfulness is practiced throughout our day, by students as well as staff, to promote perseverance, gratitude and self-awareness and regulation. As the only Art teacher at Marysville, I see each and every one of our Kindergarten through 8th grade students. For the majority of our students, the only exposure they have to art-making is in my classroom. I aim to expose my students to varied art experiences and empower them to dream outside the box, making creative choices for themselves.
