When looking a student data, we have realized that students have the potential to be doing better than scores are showing. Sitting and trying to learn for 5 to 6 hours a day is a struggle for some students and usually frustration occurs in students who just cannot succeed with that expectation. In our school, we have noticed an increase in (minor) negative behaviors. We have allowed students to sit on the floor with clip boards or stand at a counter to do their work. I have noticed students can refocus and complete required learning objectives when given these choices.
The sit and stand desks I am requesting will be used by students to self-regulate behavior and provide students with a choice to stand and work when needed. I am hoping to get 8 Mobile Sit-Down, Stand-Up Mahogany Computer Desks in order for students to move to one of the sit and stand desks when they are feeling antsy or having difficulties focusing. One goal is for students to become aware of their need for movement. It will help them learn to self-regulate if they feel free to move to the adjustable desks when their learning is disrupted due to their lack of movement. The hope is that these new desks will decrease negative classroom behaviors and teach student how to self-regulate which is a skill they will need throughout their lifetime.
Many of our students are inactive outside of school due to the economics in our community. With the national push for higher achievements, less energy is being burned by students. They need alternate seating choices that provide the ability for more release of energy. We are also hoping that student data will reach proficiency.
