These texts will help to reinforce reading as being enjoyable as well as intellectual. My students are a wonderful mix of cultures and backgrounds, and their literature should speak to this. I want my students to know that they are not unlike many of the successful authors whose works we study, and I want to prove this assertion through exploring a diverse collection of novels and authors. These novels will speak in particular to not only the struggles of their reality, but to the truth that their struggle is not done alone. My students desperately need more than just me, the only person of color in the English department, to tell them it is possible. They need to have concrete evidence, these texts.
