My students in graphic arts have become interested in the ancient technique of silk screen-printing. We use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs, and then students get to actually be hands-on with developing the print, building the screen and printing their design onto fabric. Screen-printing is a labor intensive project, but one that helps them develop real-world skills and encourage their future career goals. Fabric (shirts) and ink are a difficult expense for several students and makes up the bulk of resources requested. By providing these, students can proudly display their hard work. By using our natural resources such as the New Mexico sun, we are able to expose our prints in a safe environment. Students use the skills they acquire in this activity to further their critical thinking in art, the use of art, and how they can enter the economy as a print artist.
