Flexible seating in my classroom will provide students with sensory input; targeting individual sensory needs that may be inhibiting their learning process. The wobble stools will help with students seeking kinesthetic movement, allowing them to move around in their seat instead of getting up and running around the classroom. Bean bag chairs shape to the student's body and provides pressure input that can often make a student with Autism feel calm and secure. When the individual needs of students are met, there is often an increase in the levels of motivation, attention, and work production. Providing students with the ability to identify their needs and offer positive choices in seating can minimize maladaptive behaviors. I have witnessed first hand how small changes (like seating choices) can have a LARGE impact on students willingness to work and impact their educational performance.
