Many of my students are currently reading below grade level. Having moved through different grade levels and classrooms over the years, classroom libraries dwindle down to almost nothing. For my third graders, our current classroom library is not either challenging enough or not accessible for many of our scholars. Several of the chapter books do not come in sets, so students are unable to properly partner read, because the classroom was previously occupied by a higher grade level, most of the texts are too difficult. This brings additional challenges when planning guided reading lessons and trying to ensure students have an engaging text that also allows them to focus on meeting literacy standards. Having a classroom library will allow them access to grade level text during guided reading that is both FUN and aligns with the curriculum!
It is imperative that students have access to technology in the classroom to help provide individualized instruction. Tablets in the classroom will allow students to focus on foundational skills by using literacy programs such as Lexia and i-Ready which meet students where they are academically and provide additional practice for students!
