Books represent some of the first opportunities children have to explore the world. But the books available to my Oakland students remain overwhelmingly white and are far less diverse than the groups of children reading them. I want my students to see themselves in the books they read and recognize the value and worth of their on experiences. My goal is to build a classroom library bursting with books to represent the diversity of my students. I have researched titles and authors and have selected books by diverse authors that include with characters of color, characters who identify as LGBTQ and characters who come from a variety of places and nations and who represent the wealth of experiences that my students have to share.
