I love teaching at my school! I have always wanted to learn Spanish, and my students, 97% of whom are Hispanic, have been teaching me the basics. I can now hold basic conversations with parents, ranging from "I would like to congratulate you on your child's test score" to "Your child was throwing spit wads again today." I teach both math and science. Last year I taught both 6th and 8th grade and was able to see the incredible difference that exists between 11 year olds and 13 year olds. The 6th graders, still innocent, would bring me flowers and ask naive questions regarding puberty and relationships. The 8th graders, though shy in a room full of their peers, were hungry for attention. I had to continue to find strategic ways to only give attention for positive behavior. Both grades are similar in the sense that they are young people, full of possibility. They are hungry for knowledge and eager to participate in labs and projects.
