How do we make English learner students confident in their developing literacy skills? As teachers it is our job to provide opportunities for all learners and to foster confidence in our students. In order to help English learners, teachers must provide valuable learning opportunities and information scaffolding with advanced texts. I believe I can provide these learning opportunities through graphic novels. The graphic novels I have selected for this project are historical in nature and cover important topics ranging from the Civil Rights Movement to Japanese Internment. With these new books, my English learner students will be able to read and understand an entire book in English, for what may be the first time. Graphic novels work well for teaching English learners because they are texts scaffolded with images. English learners need visual cues like images to comprehend. English learners also benefit from text that has been broken down into more manageable pieces. Graphic novels provide narratives and information without text-laden pages. These novels are also at grade level and deal with topics I cover in my 11th grade US History course. I plan to utilize these graphic novels in two ways. First, I plan to distribute portions of the text that correspond to our unit of study. My students will use these texts to assist with comprehending the information presented in class. Second, I plan to have each student select one graphic novel they are most interested in. They will be assigned readings and must participate in progress checks. I believe the use of graphic novels in the classroom will foster confidence in English learner populations so that they can successfully read and comprehend grade-level content. Thank you for your time and consideration.
