The materials I am requesting will meet specific student requests! Recently I had a seventh and an eighth grade student come to me and ask me to sponsor an after-school soccer club. These two boys are brothers, and soccer is a large part of their culture and life! They have already gathered a group of interested peers. We need soccer balls, an agility ladder, pinnies and other soccer supplies. This soccer club will allow my students to find success by following a passion on the field and by forming connections and relationships in the school community. I teach in a small community of 5,000 people. While our small town provides many unique opportunities to our students, it also has some disadvantages. One of those disadvantages is the lack of extracurricular sports offered. We've found that students who are involved in a school-sponsored extracurricular activity tend to be more successful in the classroom. I don't want these students to miss out on that opportunity. These two students have helped me come up with a plan for the soccer club. Starting next week, we will meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15. We will practice drills to strength and agility train as well as scrimmage to practice the game. We hope to schedule scrimmages with other local teams to continue to practice, learn, and develop teamwork. The instructional cards will help me to lead the group of boys and girls in beneficial drills. These will also assist some participants in stepping into a leadership role. The cones and agility ladder will allow us to practice certain drills and exercises to develop speed and footwork. And you can't have a soccer club without soccer balls!
